Huron River Greenway Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

CapFantasy: It looks like this one is a casualty of recent flooding of the Huron River around Milan has taken its toll on this cache. I kind of thought a flood would float this down the river and now I’m sure of it. Maybe it’ll float to Lorain and I’ll find it. Until then, that’s all for this one and I’ll replace with a new cache somewhere else. Thanks to all the visitors and thanks BarchTracker for letting me know it was gone.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located is located just north off Main Street in Historic Milan, Ohio, birth place of inventor Thomas Edison. You can park at N41 18.011 W82 36.453 The trail is being turned from a rail to a hiking trail.
Much of the Huron River Greenway follows the route of the Milan Canal which was chartered in 1827, completed in 1839 and closed in 1869 after severe flooding damaged it beyond repair. This, Ohio’s only ship canal, made Milan one of the world’s busiest grain ports and nourished the shipbuilding industry at the Canal Basin at Milan, Fries’ Landing on the river, and at the City of Huron on the lake. The towpath for the canal became the right-of-way of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, which was built from 1877 to 1880, and helped to foster the development of the port of Huron. Portions of the canal remain visible as wetland backwater areas along the trail route having been isolated from each other during construction of the railroad.
The cache is a 6”round Rubbermaid container.
