The Turkey Creek Sanctuary consists of boardwalks through native vegetation areas, a jogging trail with exercise stations, and the Margaret Hames Nature Center. The winding Turkey Creek is visible from the boardwalk in many areas.
As of 1994, the Sanctuary is comprised of 113 acres, with more acreage to be added to the southeast. The park property was donated to the City of Palm Bay and to the Florida Audubon Society in 1978 by General Development Corporation. Florida Community Trust, in partnership with Brevard County's Environmentally Endangered Land Program, has added acreage.
Efforts to preserve the area began in 1981 with the formation of the Turkey Creek Sanctuary Committee, Inc., a nonprofit Florida corporation, whose sole purpose is to raise money for the Sanctuary.
The Nature Center was named after Margaret Hames, an outstanding conservation activist and teacher. The Center was opened April, 1992. The park and nature center are a result of contributions from the community, plus city, State, and county funds. The boardwalk and Nature Center are handicap accessible.
