Carquinez Scenic Drive used to be a well-traveled thoroughfare from Martinez to Crockett. Then during a major storm in 1982 part of the road fell down the cliff, and was never repaired. Later in the decade the East Bay Regional Park District acquired large tracts of land on both sides of the road, land which has become Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline. This leaves the road--- Carquinez Scenic Drive --- in a unique situation: it's still there, it's got a good surface, it's got no through traffic (and in one stretch it's got no traffic at all,) it's easy to get to, and for over four miles the view is without exaggeration -- Breathtaking.
