Geocache Description:

At the top of the steep little hill. Great View.

This cache is a Memorial cache to Floyd Schmoe and a Commemorative cache to The Search: A geocaching adventure by Thomas Reynolds and John Chen (parkman and bigkid) GC384A the first ever geocaching event held to support the protection and preservation of wild lands. The event was held on Saturday, May 4, 2002.

There were 20 caches placed in the area where this cache is placed. Each cache contained a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finder cards worth points and loads of geocaching goodies, stickers, Geocoins and keys that opened prize containers at the end of the day. One of the caches at the event was designed by Seth! called the “Schmoe Stash”. It was a multicache that was placed in honor of Mt. Rainier National Park’s first naturalist, Floyd Schmoe. At each of the first 3 waypoints cachers were looking for a very small wooden box. Inside each box was the answer to a question. At the first waypoint you found out when Floyd Schmoe was born…1895. At the 2nd waypoint you found out how many times he climbed Mt. Rainier…5 and the 3rd waypoint you found out what year his book “Wilderness Tales” was published…1930. You then used these answers to locate the final which was placed at this very location.

This plastic ammo box cache was put together by the participants of The Search and is located very close to where the “Schmoe Stash” by Seth! final multicache was located.

I was on "Team Puyallup: The Fellowship" which included Herr Fritz, Hunk of God, Super Fly (now known as Littlei), & Wild Turkey. Together, with great team work, we won 1st place and had a great time! Our team had the most points (136), collected 6 first finds, found the most keys (4) & was the only team to find all 20 caches. I have also released 5 Geocoins that we won in celebration of this event.

More Floyd Schmoe Information:

Mr. Schmoe first came to Mt. Rainier in 1919. He passed away on April 20, 2001. In the photo, Floyd Schmoe and his wife, Ruth pose at Mt. Rainier in 1922. An accomplished naturalist, author, and illustrator, Schmoe was also a great humanitarian. He helped build houses in Hiroshima after WWII. Schmoe founded the University of Friends Meeting (Quaker Church) and decades later built the Peace Park across the street from the church at age 90. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times.
