Hjälmare kanal är landets idag äldsta farbara, konstgjorda vattenväg. Den byggdes 1629-1639. Den förbinder Mälaren med Hjälmaren och användes ända in på 1970-talet för godstransporter. Kanalen är drygt 13 km lång, har nio handdrivna slussar samt en nivåskillnad på ca 22 m. Idag trafikeras kanalen främst av fritidsbåtar men man kan också åka på kanalkryssningar av olika slag.
Hjälmare canal is the oldest navigable artificial waterway in Sweden. It was built from 1629-1639. Linking Mälaren with Hjälmaren it was used for transporting goods and freight right up until the 1970s . The canal is just over 13 km in length, has nine hand powered locks and a rise of about 22 meters. Today the canal is mainly trafficked by leisure craft. But there are also several canal cruises to choose from.
