Geese and a covey of quail greeted me as I approached for the first time. Butterflies were abundant this spring morning. When you find this cache, be sure to allow a minute to reflect and log your feelings here.
Pride Mountain is a special place just off a trail that is the "pride" of the north state, the Sacramento River trail and "Nutter Butter," a great beginner bike trail popular with all that ride the fat tire. There was something special felt when sitting here, reflecting in the solitude yet so close to the popular path. For me, Pride Mountain is more. The time out in the wild is to be treasured. Two men, TarpMan, my father and Jim Pride, a mentor taught me to appreciate these times. Jim, who created Pride Mountain Vineyards, perched on the ridge between Napa and Sonoma Valleys and the Pride Institute, passed this August 2004. He was "with" me when this name was chosen months ago and will be "with" me whenever time is taken to explore the wild. Thanks, JP. Now for the fun, the journey. . . .
Nutter Butter is the name of the road/trail that leaves the north side of the pedestrian Bridge. It leads up to the power lines and trails that can lead to Keswick Dam Road or Beunaventura. The following describes accessing the cache by riding up the road from the bridge. When on a bike, I like to take this route and stash my bike in bushes as I travel the final leg to the cache. There is a "Y" where the main road continues to the right and a rutted old "road?" goes up to the left. At the top of the old rutted road you will find access point, N40 36.265 W122 26.527, where I began traveling down another a lightly brushed over, very old road. In December 2005 it had been cleaned up a bit and a fat tire enthusiast could ride most of this to within 200 feet of the cache.
Walking? Then bypass the "trail" and approach along the river from the bridge. A few big rocks and a small winter creek crossing and you're there.
