Picacho Peak, (Alt 4988') Las Cruces New Mexico.88001 cache is a cammo appropriate 4"x 10" locking plastic tube with goodies to trade. This climb is about 1000' above the city, and features awsome 360 degree views!
Picacho Peak is one of the many local gems that the Las Cruces area is able to enjoy. This peak features an easy "switchback footpath" approach from the north face, or the best approach from the south face. The south face is how we navigated the climb, and found it much more enjoyable than the footpath we used on our descent. (We later wished we had NOT taken the footpath down the mountain, as the north side has alot of boring brown lava and copias amounts of cowpies, the size of hoola-hoops!) The south side however, offers some of the most gorgeous rocks around! We saw rocks that were a mix of white, purple, red, pink, copper, lavender, orange, blue, and many mixtures of the above. The cactus varieties are also plentiful, and beautiful. **On a special note, the highest peak features a cross and has been placed there for those who seek to make religeuos pilgrimages. Please show your respect, but feel free to visit this site. Additionally, there is a glass jar with a log at the base of the cross, similar to a geo-cache, but this is not the cache you seek. Bring a pic-nic and take the time to enjoy the awsome views! We hope you enjoy this cache and climb as much as we had placing it.
