Final resting place of Green Flake; one of only two African Americans to come to Utah with the original wagon train.
This virtual is in a very small pioneer cemetary in Union. Most people are not even aware this place exists.Green Flake was one of only two African Americans (and at the time, still a slave) to come to Salt Lake City with the original wagon train in 1846. In fact, according to historical accounts and the oral history passed to Green Flakes grandson, Green Flake drove the carriage and team that brought President Brigham Young into the Salt Lake Valley.Brigham Young gave Green Flake his freedom in 1854. See the attached website (click Users Web Site up above) for more details. It's too bad none of the markers in this small cemetary pay tribute to this history. In addition to Green Flake, there are some other great markers in tribute to other pioneers, and the Mormon Battalion. Lots of wonderful local history. For confirmation, email the name of the family that donated the land for the cemetary and the name of Green Flakes wife (back of memorial.)Thanks for visiting. I hope we've showed you something new and educational.
