My quest for the treasure starts soon after I enter the forest
along the banks of the river. Just beyond the old river landing I
come upon the remains of the pirates fortress. Big vines and trees
now grow up between the ruins. Standing amidst the old buildings
and lookouts, my mind wanders as I imagine how easy it would have
been for the pirates to plunder passing ships from here that sailed
along the river. My gaze drifts slowly downriver towards the
island. High above its rocky shores, big black vultures circle
silently overhead.
I had been told that the pirates would hide their treasure out
on the island and that even today; small caches of forgotten
treasure can be found on it. The island is guarded by high water
and swift currents most of the year, but shortly after the spring
floods, the waters recede and an adventurous treasure hunter might
find a way to walk out onto the island.
A Great Blue Heron flies low along the river in front of me,
squawking loudly as he passes by. I turn my focus back to the task
at hand. Somewhere amidst these ruins is a small thin flat tablet
that I must find. Written on the tablet will be the coordinates to
the treasure hidden on the island. My pulse quickens as the
adventure begins.
- Parking is at a day use area just south of the first
coordinates. Parking area is open until 7:00 PM. If you plan on
being there later, park nearby and walk in.
- Plan on a half mile hike north along the trail from the first
coordinates to the treasure.
- Watch out for the patches of nettles and poison oak.
- Treasure is a small plastic container. Bring small items for
trade.
