Geocache Description:

EDITED 04-14-2009

"I would rather sleep in the southern corner of a little country church yard than in the tombs of the Capulets." --BURKE Letter to Matthew Smith

“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers in central Indiana. If you’re clever, you can map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip!

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #15:
”On the Banks of the Crick”

This Quest will take you to Clear Creek Cemetery on the Banks of Clear Creek, Clear Creek Twp. in Huntington County. This very well maintained cemetery is active and features a 1930 Metal Archway and an historic still-active wooden Church Building. The Clear Creek Church is a Carpenter-Builder style structure built in 1864..Some sources say it was built in 1849, however, which would make it the oldest frame church edifice in the county still in service. It was built on ground donated by John R. Emley and replaced a log cabin used for both church and school. The older part of the cemetery is directly behind the Church, with tombstones dating to the 1830’s. The oldest stone I could find was that of WESLEY EMLEY, d. 10/12/1836, one of 54 Emley family members buried here. Another interesting stone is that of the cemetery ground donor, JOHN R. EMLEY, 1787-1867, EMIGRATED TO HUNTINGTON COUNTY IN 1835.

NO NIGHT CACHING AT THIS SITE!!!

The cache container was a 35 mm film canister, but is now a small plastic bottle. If you find a fallen U.S. flag, please stick it back in the ground, preferably next to a Vet’s Marker. As always, be respectful, and cache in, trash out!
