Often called "America's second most beautiful municipal park," the above coordinates lead to the South Pavilion, City Park, Hagerstown, Maryland. Virginia Avenue borders the park. Hagerstown sits at the crossroads of Interstates 70 and 81 and State Routes 40 and 11. Parking can be had near the pavilion just off of City Park Drive as well as on Virginia Avenue. In addition to a sturdy pavilion, the site has picnic tables, charcoal grills, potable water and modern restrooms. Caches lurk nearby as well!
The Park's crown jewel is a picturesque 50-acre lake that teams with waterfowl and fish (fishing is strictly prohibited). The Park is also home to Hager House, Mansion House Art Center, The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, and a growing outdoor Railroad museum. The following website contains a wealth of information about Hagerstown City Park, past and present: www.hagerstownmd.org/html/city_park.html .
Mark your calendar and make plans now to attend the May Meet & Greet, sponsored by The Maryland Geocaching Society. The society has grown to more than five hundred members, but holy geez, if they all show up. The event is open to ALL geocachers (first-timers, some timers, rookies, veterans, hobbits & wizards) whether you hail from Baltimore, Bangalore, Baton Rouge, or Bag End. MGS members must attend the lunch/business meeting in order to claim the event as a cache.
This event will be held rain or shine. The time frame from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon will be devoted to meet & greet, Society business, lunch and the usual frenzied preparations that precede a day of caching.
The picnic's format is potluck. Bring your favorite dish to share, and cold drinks (alcohol is prohibited). The following items will be provided by the hosts- plastic ware, paper ware, coolers, water, charcoal, extra grilles and all- purpose condiments. More information on the eating venue will be posted as the need is discovered. BJ has consented to oversee the logistical deployment and consumption of vittles. Mrs. Phideo will assist as time permits (girls have ballet).
In addition to copies of cache lists and WebPages, maps of the Hagerstown area will be provided. There will be a master map bulletin board with push pins showing approximate cache locations. There will also be several laptops available from which waypoints may be downloaded in both *.loc and *.gpx formats (EasyGPS format) to GPSr & Pocket PC units. You may want to bring your own GPS and Pocket PC patch cables to ensure correct connectivity. Phideo will provide the correct setup for Magellan users which will include Mapsends Streets and Destinations software for mapping the location of the caches and could be printed out. Any volunteers for lending Garmin cables is greatly appreciated. We are also looking for a volunteer to borrow a printer for the event for the folks that still rely on cache sheets (in the hand).
Your hosts, Phideo (&Family)/ BJ&Snurt, welcome All to The Hub City Fun Series. This series of caches are located for the most part within a 2.5 mile radius of City Park. Caches will be found at historic sites, other parks, in residential neighborhoods and any number of public places. A listing of all caches follows. Several of the City Park caches have been active for some time*, the others will be activated for the event:

We would like to extend an invitation to local cachers who would like to hide caches, launch travel bugs and/or help at the pavilion on the day of the event. Please let us know by e-mail the coordinates, name and type of your hidden caches. We will also need some dedicated chefs to labor over the grilles.
Please post a note if you are planning to attend. Indicate number of attendees and food items you will be sharing.
Update notes will be posted as necessary.
