One Sorry 'Saurus Traditional Cache

In the 1920's the Sinclair Refinery, whose logo is a large green dinosaur, operated as a 90 acre petroleum refinery with a 10-15 acre landfill in Wellsville, N.Y. They were the single largest customer of the Wellsville-Addison- Galeton Railroad (known locally as the WAG Railroad). In 1958, a disastrous fire caused major damage to the plant.This fire, which ended operations at the refinery, also began the downward spiral for the railroad. In 1972 Hurricane Agnes washed out parts of the railroad bed and in 1974 Hurricane Eloise washed out additional areas. The railroad was offically abandoned in 1973, with the last run occuring in 1979 to transport parts to be dismantled.What is left of both today is the site of a Superfund Cleanup and the flat walking path known as the WAG Trail, which winds between the refinery and the Genesee River.The majority of the Sinclair property was transferred to the Village of Wellsville which conveyed land parcels to several companies and the State University of New York.The WAG trail is 9 miles long at this time, beginning in Wellsville and ending at the PA line. The goal is someday to connect with a series of trails leading to the Appalachian Trail near Harrisburg, PA. The trail currently provides access to some of the best fishing in Western New York.The WAG Trail can be accessed from several ways, but parking at N42.06.939 W 77.56.625 and crossing the pedestrian bridge is the simplest. You are looking for a retired ammo can.
