Hidden near York Redoubt, this cache is the starting point for our TB "YORKY" whose goal is to visit York-named places.
York Redoubt is a 200-year-old fortification situated on a high bluff overlooking the open Atlantic and the spectacular entrance to Halifax Harbour. The original batteries were built in 1793 and then expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries. A key element in the defense of the harbour, York Redoubt remained in military use until 1956. (redoubt, n. ...a protected place of refuge or defense...from Medieval Latin 'reductus': A CONCEALED PLACE) To locate Yorky's 'redoubt' there are many possible starting points and trails which will bring you NEAR the cache coordinates. Yorky's 'concealed place' is an ammo can hidden under an up-rooted evergreen just off the beaten path; however, only minimal bushwacking is required. Once you've found it, take time to continue along the trail to a man-made cave (flashlight recommended) and also to explore York Redoubt's armaments and enjoy the panoramic views.
