This cache is named after my hiking companion, “Abby, the Cache Dog”.
It is a mile into the woods and is an answer to all those cache-and-dash caches. It is bordered by one of the largest swamps in Pike County. If you enjoy reading topo maps and use a little thinking, it is a pleasant walk down and old woods road that turns into a hunting trail and then a couple tenths of a mile bushwhack. If you try to take a beeline to it from many places you will end up in impenetrable rhododendron groves in the middle of a huge swamp! Mark your starting point! (:
Once you are deep in “Penn’s Woods” you will see much wildlife. I’ve seen wild turkeys, pileated woodpeckers, red tailed hawks and of course, deer. Coyotes, bears and bobcats also live back here. (Though you will be lucky to see one of them!) In the spring the chorus from the spring peepers in the swamp can be deafening!
The cache is on state land so wear blaze-orange during hunting season. Also, ticks are a problem in warmer weather. Wear light colored clothing and tuck your pants into your socks. Check yourself carefully after your hike for “hitchhikers”.
The best approach is from the parking area at the entrance to Sunrise Lake on rt. 739 at coordinates N41 18.103, W74 58.225. There are other approaches but if you try them you may regret it! (:
The container is an old ammo box. Take a picture with the cache-cam when you log your visit. When the camera is full email me and I’ll retrieve it, replace it and post the photos here. The original contents are a bunch of miscellaneous toys and a nice first finders prize.
