This is a short, easy roadside cache located in a scenic, historic rest area just north of Boonville, NY.
The Black River Canal System ran from Rome to Carthage, NY, and was originally built as a feeder system to the Barge and Erie Canals. It also opened up the logging industry of the North Country for easier access and trading with the rest of the state. Work on this particular stretch (from Lansing Kill to High Falls) began in 1838, consisted of 109 locks in a 35 mile route and was completed in 1855. Along this route, there were numerous multi-lock groups with four or five lock combinations. The system fell into disuse later on, and was abandoned in 1926.The cache is located at one of the multi-lock locations just outside of Boonville, NY. This set of four locks was made into a parking and rest area along the Rte.12 highway from Boonville to Port Leyden. Access to the cache is fast and safe, but worth your while to stop and read the history. You’ll be looking for a microcache, so just sign and stamp the log. And enjoy your visit.
