Geocache Description:

Prior to 1842, Baptists in Washington County wanting a 'preaching' relied either on a visiting preacher in their homes, the yearly attendance at a Camp Meeting, or they could travel 20-plus miles to attend the Baptist church at Independence. But in May of 1842, local Baptists met at the small village of Jacksonville, about 3 miles north of today's Chappell Hill, and formed the Providence Baptist Church, with services being held in homes, or wherever suitable space could be found.

The first Providence church building was actually built outside Jacksonville near the village of Cedar Creek. Worship services were biracial, with slaves and owners attending. However, as Chappell Hill grew, services began alternating between the Cedar Creek site and Chappell Hill. A storm demolished the Cedar Creek building in 1866, and all services were conducted from then on in Chappell Hill. In 1873, a new Providence Baptist Church building (the current structure you are visiting) was built on Main Street. During the late 60’s, an ecumenical effort provided much-needed repairs and paint to the church, but it was given a full-scale restoration in 2000 by the Chappell Hill Historical Society (which had purchased the church in 1997).

The listed coordinates will bring you to the front of the Church. From here you can clearly see the Texas Historical Marker - locate the small year date at the bottom of that plaque (not in the text of the plaque, but on the very last line at the bottom). Plug that date in below to get the coordinates for the cache container:
N 30° 08.[DATE-1540]
W 096° 15.[DATE-1546]

At the second leg, which is within 300 feet of the first leg, you're looking for a small, log-only small mint-tin - so remember to bring a writing utensil! This cache has been carefully concealed, and is located just outside a very high traffic area, so PLEASE be discreet in removing and replacing the cache. Also PLEASE be sure and put it back exactly as you found it, so that the cache is carefully concealed from muggles.
