Geocache Description:

Geocaching Scotland

Loch Ardinning is a 143-hectare reserve situated two miles north of Milngavie on the A81. It consists of a Loch, mixed woodland and heather moor. It supports breeding and wintering Wildfowl. It is one of those places that you drive by without realising that it is there and quite possibly not visited as much as it should be because of its proximity to Mugdock.

Dr. Robert Kerr gifted Loch Ardinning and the adjacent Muirhouse Muir to the Scottish Wildlife Trust in December 1988. The main part of Loch Ardinning is a natural loch in a glacially formed hollow, which provides open water for many species of duck and other waterfowl. The building of a dam created the narrow northwestern arm of the loch artificially across the outflow stream in 1796. The dam was raised and widened around 1840. It was further rebuilt in 1991 with a new spillway arrangement and scour valve to comply with the Reservoirs Act.

Limited parking near by on A81 especially at weekend’s…lots of dog walkers. During the week it is reasonably quiet. A fairly short walk over good ground until the last 50/100 meters but on a clear day good views.
