To get to this cache you'll have to walk like an Egyptian to the top of a pyramid. Accuracy 9m, elevation 40m.
The cache is located at the top of a local volcanic feature known as The Pyramids. These are volcanic basalt formations of a similar nature to the Organ Pipes on Mt Cargill.
To get there, take the Peninsula road from Dunedin out to Portobello, then either:
- Go through Portobello, continuing towards Tairoa Head. Turn right into Weir Rd at S45 49.942 E170 40.374, over the rise then left into Dick Rd. Continue along to the end of the gravel road and park in the carpark at S45 49.684 E170 42.468; or
- At Portobello, turn right onto Hoopers Inlet Rd, then at the Inlet left into Allans Beach Rd, 500m along left into Sheppard Rd, over the ridge, then left around the Inlet, past Weir Rd onto Dick Rd and along to the carpark at S45 49.684 E170 42.468.
From there, follow the track to the Pyramids and up the smaller mound on the right. Please BE CAREFUL when hunting for the cache at the top, it's a long way down!
Once you've found the cache, it's worth strolling out to Victory Beach: so-named after the steamship Victory that sank at the mouth of the Inlet in 1861. Also, Yellow-eyed penguins nest at the northern end of the beach, while Hooker sea lions are known to frequent the southern end.
The container is a 1.2ltr camo-painted snaplok container and when first placed, contained the following:

- Inflatable Dinosaur globe
