When completed, the 72-mile long Foothills Parkway will offer the most outstanding scenic views available to motorists in
and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A portion of the parkway parallels the northwest boundary of the park on
a right of way provided by the state. The 1.6-mile “missing link” in the 14.9-mile section between Walland and Wears Valley
occurred when construction techniques failed, necessitating a redesign. This section of the Parkway was never completed, but
is open to bicycles, hikers, and horses. A large population of deer, black bear, hawks and other critters live in the area
and offer photographic opportunities. They should not be approached or fed. If you are unfamiliar on how to act around
wildlife, stop by your nearest visitor center and talk to a park ranger. They have the privilege of encountering wildlife
nearly on a weekly basis.

Construction has recently been restarted on the unfinished gap so the public may use only 9.1 miles of the Walland section. This is not a problem since the distance from the gate to the trail is less then 0.15 miles. The cache is about 0.11 miles down the trail. The trail is unnamed and could be hidden by undergrowth. Turn into the woods at the corner of the bridge before crossing the river. This area is closed after dark so sufficient time should be allotted to get back to your vehicle before dark. It is an easy walk to the cache and requires no special equipment. However, since the river is nearby, the hillside drops away somewhat steeply fifty feet from the cache. Uncontrollable children should be put on a leash or left at the car with an adult. Recommended parking is at these coordinates: N 35° 43.101 W 83° 49.277 where there is room for about five or six cars on the shoulder near the gate. The gate should not be blocked.
