The coordinates are for the first leg of this ‘three part’ cache located in Tolland at the Shafran Conservation Area. Cache is a plastic mayonnaise jar.
This 65-acre parcel of forest is located in the watershed of Shenipsit Lake. Parking is limited to three small cars at the entrance. Marked trails covered with pine needles take hikers through stands of white and pitch pine as well as areas of green ferns. There are three acres of pitch pine, also known as candlewood, and are a rarity in inland areas. The trees are loaded with pitch, which shipbuilders used as a source of pine tar. Settlers also built torches from pieces of the wood, since they would remain lit for hours. Further into the park is another area dominated by white pine, some of which are three feet in diameter. Two small ponds feed Cemetery Brook (there is one foot bridge), which flows into Shenipsit Lake. Dog friendly area. Expect many ticks and mosquitoes. Please obey boundary markers.Park here: 41° 53.614' N 72° 24.418' W
