Pinckney's Point Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Waterbaron: I must have forgotten to archive this one.

Beaufort County's legislative delegation does not want Geocaching in South Carolina and I hope geocachers take their money elsewhere. I certainly don't want to encourage folks to visit by maintaining geocaches here.

Since H3777 was introduced, I've stopped buying "big ticket" items in Beaufort County and either buy in Georgia or in a SC county where their representative had enough intelligence to recognize that Rep. Ceips was pushing cowabunga. (A few weeks ago, I bought a new truck from a Lexington County dealership [Thanks, Nikki!!] instead of in Beaufort County.)

(My only exception is Hunting Island State Park. They still realize that geocachers are quality visitors, despite efforts by Rep. Ceips to change their minds.)

Geocache Description:

Located on Pinckney Island between Skull Creek and Mackays Creek.

Although the maintained areas and trails of Pinckney Island are wonderful, IMHO, neither of the existing caches on the northern section of Pinckney Island gives the visitor the feel for what these islands are when they are undisturbed. After all, much of Pinckney Island was agricultural land until just a few decades ago.

This easy multi-cache is designed to give you a look at how the islands develop without human intervention. At your starting point, you’ll be in an area that human visitors frequent. You’ll see signs of human intervention in aiding the re-establishment of native bivalves. (If the weather is cool, bring your SC saltwater fishing license and a bucket. There are public oyster beds nearby.)

The next stage will take you to the highest point of dry land on the island. Since much of this soil is dredge spoil from Skull Creek (the Intercoastal Waterway), you can often find sharks’ teeth in the tidal sand.

Head south to the next stage and you’ll have an unobstructed view of the marshes from Bluffton’s Brighton Beach to Harbour Town.

Continue your circuit of the island and you’ll find coords that will take you to the heart of the island where the cache container is located. It’s relatively small, so bring small trade goods.

Add a star or two to the terrain if you come at high tide or during the summer.
