Geocache Description:

Powell's expedition of the Green & Colo. River

Expedition Island has been designated a National Historic Landmark because this is the place John Wesley Powell & his crews shoved off on two seperate trips to explore the Green & Colo. Rivers. The first expedition, which started May 24,1869, began in four specially-built boats christened MAID OF THE CANON, KITTY CLYDE'S SISTER, NO NAME & THE EMMA DEAN. The large boats each carried two thousand pounds of cargo consisting of enough supplies for ten months. NO NAME wrecked about June 8, & a large part of the supplies were lost. This adventure quickly turned into a trip for survival. At the end, the men were living on coffee, dough gods(cooked lumps of moldy flour) & musty dried apples. The second expedition, in 1871, with a different crew, was more successful in scientific terms. The canyons were named, the first photographs of the river taken & the river was mapped. e-mail us the answers to these questions. Part A (1) How many days did it take for the first expedition to end in the Grand Canyon? (2) How many people were left in the group at the end of the trip? Part B Name 3 uses of trona.
