Geocache Description:

There is a new housing developement going up so access the trail from the construction area at the end of the cul-de-sac. HAve no idea how long this access will be available, but it the easiest way to the cache currently. From where you park, you should be able to see where the cache site, it's a short hike up the hill on a well defined trail. Small children will be able to make the hike if given enough time.

According to one of the many local legends, Wenatchee means the valley of the Rainbow Robe.

One legend has it that a Wenatchi princess came over from the west side of the mountains. When she found our valley she fell in love with the sun and he in turn invited her to dance in his light.

She, being of the waters and he of the sun, led to the creation of rainbows from their union. He wove her a wedding robe of rainbow threads, which she wore when she danced.

Her mother, the moon, heard of the marriage and became enraged with jealousy, so enraged was she, that she caused lava to erupt and flow across the eastern plateau.

The princess hurt by her mother’s jealousy, cried so much her tears caused a flood opening Moses Coulee and stopping the lava before it filled our valley.

The princess threw off her rainbow robe and ran to hide in the hills. Looking south from the top of Burch Mountain Road, you may see the princess’s robe in the folds of the hills to the west, her arms reaching up to the sun.

The site of this cache is my favorite place to sit and contemplate and a mural painted by local artist Jan Cook Mack, depicting the site of this cache, can be seen in Columbia Station. Bring a lunch and a camera, you’ll be sorry you didn’t.
