“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers in central Indiana. You can map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip!

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #24:
”The Old Wooden Cross”

The trail of this quest will lead you to Gilead Cemetery in Perry Township, Miami County, Indiana. It’s a fairly big place, with burials dating back to the 1840’s and still active. A nice feature is the combination Tool Shed, His & Hers Outhouse. If you wander around a bit, you may find the bronze marker of a twenty-one-year-old paratrooper who died in Viet Nam, MICHAEL KARL WYMIRE, from Macy, and the marker for a Great War Ammo Train Wagoner, MERRILL ELLIOTT.(Can you picture the mules pulling the wagons somewhere in France?) Another touching memorial you may come across is that for sixteen-year-old RANDY LEE HUGHES. Another stone with wording you rarely see is that for ALFRED DOUD “Believed Buried Here”. You can see photos of these stones on the links below. This cemetery also is the location for the Swihart Stone with the laser-etched image of the Roan Covered Bridge and adjacent Citizens Cemetery (ISQ # 30) It is located due south of the Outhouse. But this cache site is dedicated to sailor who died in World War II, whose small bronze plaque reads:

ENSIGN KENNETH E. GEPPINGER

1920 – 1944

This veteran’s plain plaque is attached to a simple wooden cross made from common 2x 4’s , broken at the base…

The original cache container was a small Tupperware-type container ,but it has gone missing and has been replaced with an orange plastic pill bottle--so it's now a MICRO, but should be easy to find...Oops! now it's a camo'd pill bottle--Oops! now it's been replaced with a film can--oops! now it's another film can!.OOPS NOW IT'S ANOTHER ONE! If you find a fallen U.S. flag, please stick it back in the ground, preferably next to a Vet’s Marker. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
