Geocache Description:

Skibo Vista Scenic Overlook

This Skibo Vista Scenic Overlook offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Laurentian Divide, perfect for viewing any time of the year, but especially gorgeous in the fall.  There are picnic tables and a rustic, outdoor bathroom.  This site has historic significance as well as a beautiful view:  At one time there was an observation tower that was used to watch for forest fires.  The pilings for the tower are still in place.  From the viewpoint, one can see several different towns and mining facilities.

This is one of several caches that we have or will be placing in the area for geocachers to enjoy the views and history of our part of Minnesota's Iron Range.

It would probably be best not to look for this cache during the hunting season in the fall.

The 61-mile Superior National Forest Scenic Byway is the shortest and most memorable route between lake Superior and the Iron Range.  It links communities with much more in common than the new stretch of highway.  Ore mined from the Mesabi Range is converted to pellets and loaded on to 1,000-foot ore boats at the docks in Silver Bay.  The history of the entire area is rich with the shared traditions of mining, timber and tourism, as well as the cultural heritage of the immigrants who settled here.  The people here are some of the friendliest you will ever meet!

Residents and visitors along the route enjoy fabulous outdoor recreation including numerous trails.  Lodging, dining, shopping and gas are available in Hoyt Lakes and Aurora, as well as in Silver Bay and Beaver Bay.

Cache is in a small ammo can.  Original contents included a rain poncho, a WG $1 bill, Mardi Gras beads, fishing lures, key chains, a sewing kit, a photo frame, hair clips, a pen, a golf ball, stickers.  Thing One TB got its travel started here.

Please be sure to hide it well as there were problems in the past. Thanks and Happy Caching!
