As far back as 20,000 years ago, Homo sapiens
has been counting time. The first evidence of timekeeping is
found in the form of scratches and notches placed on objects,
possibly to track the phases of the moon. Sumerians of the
Tigris-Euphrates valley had a calendar 5000 years ago, and the
Egyptians and Mayans used a 365 day calendar over 3000 years
ago. And then there is always Stonehenge, which is thought to
also be a time tracker of sorts.
Sun or shadow clocks were first used by Sumerians and
then the Egyptians around 3500 years ago. The first clock not
to use celestial bodies was the water clock (1500 years ago).
The spring-powered clock was invented in the 16th century but it
wasn't until the invention of the pendulum clock in the late 17th
century that time could be accurately kept (and a second arm was
added to show minutes).
OK, getting tired of clock history? Let's get
into the gist of this cache hunt! There are 4 waypoints
(including the beginning wp) and the final cache. Each
waypoint will take you to an object which you will study and then
apply a little math and/or substitution to come up with the next
waypoint. You
will need to remember some of the waypoints, so I encourage you to
write things down as you go. Folks have politely told me that the final was
difficult to find, so I've added more hints as of 8/17/04 and have
upped the container to an ammo can painted black. I suggest reading
the hints, as I wouldn't want to see a DNF after all the work you
did to find this one! Also, it would be best to start walking in a
NORTHWARDS direction from the first wp.
You will need to use this.
