In some woods near the town of Bo'ness, on the River Forth
On the south bank of the River Forth there is a Right Of Way path which extends between the towns of Bo'ness and Blackness and beyond. You can start from either location. Bo'ness is closer as the cache is not far from Carriden House around which there is a network of paths. We suggest starting from Blackness which has ample parking and provides a pleasant walk along the shore, allowing about 1.5 hours for the return trip. The path is generally quite good but, if you have young children, be prepared for short stretches of stoney and muddy ground (after rain), and overgrown sections in the summer months (nettles could be a problem for those wearing shorts!). In the woods near to Bo'ness the path forks in places, there are alternatives to explore and you should aim to be higher than the shore path (especially where a log appears to block the way). When visibility is good the views are expansive and varied. To the East beyond Blackness Castle you will see the Naval dockyard at Rosyth and perhaps the local Ferry with the Forth Bridges in the background. To the North-West across the river and behind Longannet Power station, are a range of hills called the Ochills with the higher hills and munros near Calendar further to the West. Along the coast you will see numerous species of sea birds and in the woods you might see Pheasant, Grey Squirrels, Roe Deer and Fox. There are also many rhododendrum and holly trees in the area.
Initial Cache contents - bouncy ball, pack of playing cards, toy car, marker pen, 2 x "Goats!" CD Roms.
If you're curious about the history of this area, please read The Forester's enlightening description - many thanks for this. The area is full of surprises - newly discovered is what looks like an old viewpoint to the East of the cache. The fact that trees now obscure the view may be a clue to its antiquity.
Warning!
Various obstacles have hindered or alarmed cache finders. In 2004 a family of small (Wren-like) birds were being reared very close to the cache. In Aug/Sept 2005 a fallen branch has made access to the cache entrance difficult though not impossible. This has now been cleared, but the area remains quite wild!
