A cache to tell you about the wild hog of Florida, the Piney Wood Rooter.
When the Spanish first came to Florida, over 400 years ago, they brought all the livestock they would need to live in this new land. The hogs they brought with them soon escaped domestication and went back to the wild state. The hogs thrived and are still here by the thousands and are known as Wild Boar, Razorbacks, or Piney Wood Rooters. They bear little resemblance to the domestic swine of today. They are generally black with shaggy coarse hair, although red and other colors can sometimes be found. They are usually smaller and grow much slower than domestic hogs and are much more vicious with large, razor sharp tusks (called tushes here). Of all the animals in the woods, the adult boar hog is the one that I least like to have after me. They are hunted here with ‘catch dogs’ and a good hog dog can catch and hold a pretty good sized hog, but if the dog makes a mistake, he will pay dearly. They are also caught by means of a baited trap, consisting of a strong pen with a drop-gate. Hogs are suckers for corn and will readily enter a baited trap.If you catch and feed out one of these beasts you will find that no pork you can buy in a store will compare to the flavor of wild hog. Many people have tried wild pork and did not like it. This is probably because the hog was a boar or because it was not fed out properly. The cache is in an ammo can and is hidden at a place that has a similar name as the cache. This is also one of the areas where the wild hog can be found in large numbers. It is in rough palmettos so be sure you wear long pants and sturdy shoes. When placed the cache contained: Logbook and penFirst To Find CertificateTravel Bug - Th' PerfessorA Wheresgeorge billtube of super-gluea bottle of hotel lotiona 'Sun Tropez' sunglasses caseseveral toys, matchbox car, ball, etc.
