BlackHills Mines #2 (Ingersoll Mine) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Christopher Pike: Unfortunately, this cache page has been archived due to the lack of a timely maintenance resolution, or no response to my previous note. If the owner would like to have it reinstated, please contact me through my profile or email address referencing the GC code and name of the cache within the next 30 days. Please note that un-archiving a cache page places it through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines and land manager policies currently in effect.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and look forward to seeing more of your caches up and running in the future.

Geocache Description:

Ingersoll Mine is located a few miles outside of Keystone just off of Old Hill City Rd. There's a place to park at N 43*54.121' W 103*27.034', and it's all uphill from here.

Ingersoll Mine started in the late 1800's again looking for gold... they found some, but more tin, lithium, and mica. Inside the mine can also be found verdelite (a species of green tourmaline), and autunite (a slighty radio-active phosphate of uranium... this stuff is neat, it glows BRIGHT green under uv light). There is also lots of garnets all over out here. I'm not sure when the mine closed, but it did (obviously).

**CAUTION** This is an ABANDON mine. As such, it has not been maintained in the last 20-30 years. If you do decide to go inside, please be careful. Keep an eye on the floor, there's a couple spots where it disappears. These holes are filled with water, and are probably quite deep.

This hillside is like swiss cheese, there are four mine shafts here that I've been in, and there are probably more if you look for them.
