Geocache Description:

Bring your camera, lunch and enjoy the view that stretches from north-south. One of my favorite viewpoint/camping spots that is accessable with a car nearly year around. Located at the 2600ft level on Mt Pilchuck. You're looking for a 4X4" Lok-N-Lok box.

Go to Granite Falls and take the Mt Loop Hyway about 11 miles just past Verlot. Cross over the light blue bridge and take the next right on the Mt Pilchuck Rd. This road used to be paved to the ski area, but over the past 30 years is mostly potholed gravel to the turn off at N 48 04.621 W 121 49.797 Turn right here or park off the main road. I drove my Honda Civic without any problems to near the cache site. The big puddles are hard bottomed, so drive on through. Walk/drive 1.5 miles to parking at N 48 04.149 W 121 50 278 If you have a truck or SUV you can continue another 200 yds down the road to the end and very close to the cache. Don't drive down if you have a car. The road looks nice and is most of the way except for a whoop-de-doo spot that you will get stuck in big time if you don't have the ground clearance. Lots of junk and garbage is being dumped in this area, so hopefully it won't get shut down any time soon. The cache should be easy to find at the view point. I don't know if they hang glide from here, but it looks like a perfect spot. Stay for a sunset and you'll agree this is a special spot. The elevation is about 2600ft. so doesn't get the heavy snow that the higher areas of the roads see. I've driven up here into Jan. of most years and with the mild winters we've had it's accessable almost year around. If you go back out to the main road it becomes paved and is a easy drive to the top parking lot with good views looking east and north. Another cache Mt Pilchuck North is up top via the trail.

Update: There is a new gate at the Heather Lake trailhead and last year the Forest Service closed the road in early Dec. I would expect the road to be closed from Dec 1-April. You can still hike in from the gate. NW forest pass is required to park at the gate.
