“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers in central Indiana. You can map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip and at the same time learn a little about our history.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #29
”The Benchmark”

The trail of this quest will lead you to Barnes Chapel Cemetery in Rock Creek Township, Huntington County, Indiana. This neat old graveyard has tombstones dating to the 1840’s and 1850’s, and is the final resting place of several Civil War Veterans. Across the street, you can see the Wabash Primitive Baptist Church (Still Active), a beautiful white wooden structure. The Church was established in 1866... The mortal remains of over 800 souls are deposited here, including 180 unknown buriels. The White Church Cemetery was relocated here in the 1960's because of the Reservoir.

Among the Civil War soldiers buried here, is a memorial to:

The cemetery is bounded on three sides by Reservoir property. Your Mission, should you choose to accept it, is to locate a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Survey Mark. The mark is a small metal disc set in a round concrete monument about 4” above ground level and is marked by an orange Fiberglass Witness Post. There you will find the micro-cache. Should you fail to find the cache or be killed or captured by muggles, the cache hider will disavow any knowledge of this quest. This page will self destruct in 20 seconds.

This cache was placed with the aid of Misty, the real Lead Dog.

The micro-cache container is a 35 mm film canister. If you find a fallen U.S. flag, please stick it back in the ground, preferably next to a Vet’s Marker. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
