There is a nice trail all the way to the General that is easily passable for a fit adult. There is some steep elevation change and the hike is about 6 miles round trip from the recommended trail head. There is no need to go off of the trail to get to the General, even if your GPS tells you to. The area is very scenic and on a clear day the views are nice. There is poison oak on the preserve, but if you stay on the trails you will avoid it.
The Saluting General
The Saluting General is a huge old Redwood tree that has stood for over a thousand years. Saved only from the loggers saw by scars that he sustained from a massive wildfire. He has a unique branch that is his Salute. There are three other Caches on the way in, and I recommend that you park near Semi-secret trail head cache, although there are three other trail heads for this open-space preserve.
Update 08/17/2004 IMPORTANT because of the tree cover in the area, I highly recommend that you bring the hint. The Cache is no longer in the tree, it is about 50 feet away.
