Geocache Description:

Located on the Bass Lake Trail. Follow 169 east of Ely to Co.Rd.88(Grant McMahan Blvd). Take 88 north to the Echo Trail(Co.Rd. 116). Go North on the Echo Trail to the Bass Lake parking lot.The trail can be very rocky, with exposed roots, pine needles, loose leaves, and wet spots. Wear footgear with good ankle support. I WILL DELETE ANY SPOILERS (LOGS/PICTURES) THAT INDICATE THE CACHE LOCATION OR THE CONTAINER. A scenic picture is OK. Cache inaccessible in winter. USFS PERMIT

BYOP -Start at the BASS LAKE PARKING LOT (N47 56.954 W 091 52.464). Follow the trail from the parking lot to the sign directing you to DRY FALLS. After you turn on the DRY FALLS trail proceed past the snowmobile trail and up the steep hill towards the cache.

It is about a 30 minute hike from the parking lot to the cache area. BRING LIQUIDS TO DRINK OR A WATER FILTER TO DRINK LAKE WATER.

It would take about 4 hrs to do all three caches on this trail. A stylized map of the trail may be picked up at the USFS across from the International Wolf Center on HWY 169.

Read the USFS explanation of the great event that took place here in the spring of 1925.

On your way in, when you cross the stream, you are also crossing the Burntside Lake fault which is part of the Vermilion Fault System that stretches to North Dakota. This fault caused the cliff and the stream valley to look as it does today. A geological fault is a line along which the rock layers have shifted (The San Andreas fault in California is one you may be familiar with). This is the same fault that is described in my IT'S NOT MY FAULT EARTHCACHE which you will pass on the way to the BASS LAKE TRAIL caches.

If you continue about 2 blocks past the cache you will come to DRY FALLS. You will pass a minor set of falls, but DRY FALLS empties directly into the lake. These falls were created when Bass Lake and Dry Lake were drained.

Because of the human traffic in the area of the falls, I placed the cache in a less traveled spot, but walk to the vista and the falls-which is a popular picnic spot.

If you want to, you can put in at the canoe access, and paddle pretty close to the cache, and also portage into and paddle Low Lake. You can also reach THE LOUD ROAR CACHE and BASS LAKE VISTA caches by paddling to the portage between Bass and Low Lakes. These caches can also be reached via the Low Lake access by driving the Cloquet Line.

CACHE: Black plastic thermos.

CONTENTS: logbook and pencil and assorted trade items.
