Geocache Description:

Are you old enuff to remember Kirk Douglas' classic role in "Champion"?

“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers in central Indiana. You can map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip and at the same time learn a little about our history.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #31
”The Champion”

>Following the trail to this quest will take you to Laketon (Ijamsville) Cemetery in Wabash County, Indiana. The cemetery is old but active, with burials this year. Check out all the rusty old iron star-shaped flag holders—they mark Civil War Vets’ plots. And see if you can find a baby named for the hero of Manila Bay—ADMIRAL DEWEY JOHNSON 11-5-1898 3-19-1899. And of course, be sure to look over the 1901 White Wooden Christian Church across the street.

As we were hiding the cache, we came across a grave for a familiar name:

CHAMPION HELVEY

d. 3/30/1882, AGED 57 YRS.

This name struck a chord in our memory, as we know a Champion Helvey built the first log cabin (Which still stands) in Huntington, Indiana and was the first County Sheriff.. This Laketon Champion would have been a youngster when that cabin was built. But subsequent research revealed that the Huntington Helvey with his brother Joel were Huntington County pioneers and Champion was a Civil War Vet with the 7th Ind. Cavalry, 119th Regiment, Co. L …There is a third Champion Shirley Helvey (1854-1893) buried in N. Manchester. I hope I haven’t got these guys mixed up…

The cache container is a small plastic peanut butter jar. The clue below is a spoiler. If you find a fallen U.S. flag, please stick it back in the ground, preferably next to a Vet’s Marker. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
