Geocache Description:

This is a four stage multi-cache with a “Mauler Original” cache container as the final goal. Bring your own pen or pencil to sign the log sheet. You will drive approximately 12 miles and hike 1 mile during the course of the hunt. My Garmin indicated an accuracy of 42 feet at the final location.

The above coordinates will lead you to a commercial structure located within the Pearl River floodplain. This location will serve as the starting point of the hunt. I had considered an “Easter Flood of 1979” cache for a few months and with a little prodding from SSQ, decided to create the cache during the 25th anniversary year of the flood. You must solve the riddle to complete the needed final coordinate set. Please do not attempt to retrieve the cache unless you can replace it in its original location and condition! TO VERIFY YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT, PLEASE E-MAIL THE MESSAGE FOUND WITHIN TO ME BEFORE YOU POST A FIND, OR I WILL DELETE YOUR LOG. Good Luck!

You will need specialized equipment or a certain tool to retrieve and replace this cache.

Final Coordinates are: N 32 degrees 2C.E85 W-89 degrees 5K.2A5

The following four questions are related to methods of correctly “floodproofing” structures located within the floodplain.

1. The first stage in building your commercial structure is to locate the Flood Insurance Rate Map (aka flood map) of the location. Your building will be located within the city of Jackson. Go to the FEMA website, click on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, click on “flood maps,” then "Mississippi." You will find the Jackson within Hinds County. How many panels make up the city’s flood map (including the index)? Use your answer to replace the letter ‘K’ within the final coordinates.

2. Elevated on Fill: At the first stage location of this hunt, find the northeast corner of the building. How many steps are found leading from the ‘break area’ to the elevated floor of the building? Please include the top or final step in your count. Add the two numerals together and use the sum to replace the letter ‘C’ within the final coordinates.

3. Elevated on Piers: This is the second stage of the hunt. Find the structure located at N 32 degrees 20.089 W-90 degrees 08.303. How many interior columns (yellow) support the floor of the building? Take this number and add 1. Use your answer to replace the letter ‘E’ within the final coordinates.

4. Dry Floodproofed: Third stage stop. The building located at N 32 degrees 19.933 W-90 08.056 has been made watertight for a height of approximately 3 feet. What is the numeral address of this building? Use the first numeral to replace the letter ‘A’ within the final coordinates.

Now that you have seen three different methods that can be used to construct a non-residential structure within the floodplain you are ready to build! Remember to add at least one foot of freeboard for a factor of safety and cheaper insurance premiums!
