Geocache Description:

A quick rest stop cache, small will only hold small items, bring your own pen to log with. NOTE: This cache keeps migrating. So I moved it on May 14,2006 to a new location. DO NOT rehide it where you think it should be! Thank You!

Stevens Pass in named after John F. Stevens who noticed the gap while surveying for the Great Northern Railway in 1890. A corduroy road called the Tote Rd was built using split logs over the swampy areas. This was not to be a permanent road but by 1893 when the railway was completed it was an established track through the forest. Many settlements had grown up in the area by this time. By 1911 an automobile highway was envisioned. In 1925 the Cascade Scenic Highway was opened. The original route followed sections of the old Tote Rd. and abandoned railway switchbacks. It was a one-lane road averaging 14 feet in width with turnouts for passing. Many decades and several realignments later the Stevens Pass Highway remains one of Washington State’s most scenic thoroughfares.
