Ye Old Mill - aka - Powder Horn Mill Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pofe: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed in memory of “Ye Old Mill also known as The Powder Horn Mill” There are some foundational remains in Appelt Park along the hamburg turnpike in Riverdale, N.J. There is a parking area on hamburg turnpike near the park. The first stage is a micro and the Cache is a regular size container.

According to an article written by Charlotte Saltarelli in the “borough of Riverdale 75th Anniversary commemorative Book (and boy what a time I had finding any information on this) Ye Old Mill was build around 1726 as a grist mill which at one time furnished grain for Washington’s troops when they passed through during the American Revolution and remained an active mill for the next century. Several millstones have been found in the area and there is still one very near the site.

In the early 1900’s it was purchased by Maude Patterson and opened as a “waffle and tea shop” and later an “antique shop”.In 1955 it opened as the Powder Horn Mill Restaurant. It had an early American atmosphere with wide pegged floor boards and ceilings and original glass windows. At the entrance stood a huge fireplace with authentic antiques adorning its wide mantle.

I vaguely remember dining there with my parents in the early 70’s as a youngster. I seem to recall a colorfully lit organ and green or orange lights cast upon its pipes. I also remember the fireplace and mantle but the memories are just vague. If anyone has any memories of this restaurant please write about them in your logs.

The date is not mentioned in the article but I believe it burnt down the mid to late seventy’s and in 1997 a crane took down the fire gutted remains.

This cache is near a very popular fishing river so I thought I would make it a fishing theme although you dont need to be a fisherman to seek it. So grab your pole and waders and bring some bait along and everything else you need to bag some trout is right in the cache. While your there you could also cross the river at the tressel and go after BrianSnats "Federal Hill" Cache GC3CE9. (I dont think he'll mind the plug.) And if anyone is near the Sparta area Check out our "Weldon Brook Micro" Cache GCHTFY. Only 2 seekers and its been out there since early March in a beautiful area that was recently taken over by the State.
