Oakwell Country Park, Birstall, West Yorks. Easy walking-accessible
with wheel/push chairs
This cache replaces the original Uncle Sam and the return to Uncle
Sam cache placed by Slytherin. We hope that this one lasts a bit
longer!
The cache is located in the Oakwell Hall Country park. It will be
just as tricky as the previous caches here but it well worth the
visit.
Oakwell Hall was visited by Emily Bronte in the 1830s and based the
house “Fieldhead”, in her novel Shirley, on the hall. Today Oakwell
is owned by Kirklees Council and displays some of the original
fixtures and fittings of the Batt family who lived there in the
17th century. During the winter the house is opened some evenings
for a mediaeval feast and a spooky guided tour.
The house is set in over 200 acres of managed parkland guided bird
watching and nature walks are available. Contact
oakwell.hall@kirklees.gov.uk, or phone : 01924 326240
There is a visitor centre, souvenir shop and café.
