WELCOME TO HUNTINGTON
This is an urban “Dash & Cashe” just like they have in the big cities. The cache is a micro, located just a few steps from the parking lot. This one can be done easily on your lunch hour, if you live near Huntington, or can be a picnic cache… In order to log a find, you must find the micro container and sign its log, then find the Historical Marker and email us with the answer to a question.
Forks of The Little Wabash:
”Huntington Ford”
This Cache takes you to a spot where you can view the Huntington, Indiana Dam. The dam was the source of water power for the Huntington Mill built in 1861 and which burned down in 1939. The Mill stood roughly where the abandoned Chinese Drive Thru stands now. (South bank). As you gaze at the dam, you will notice the Little River splits, passing to your left and your right. Yes, you are on an island in the middle of the river! Now turn around, look back across the road. You can see two modern bridges are needed to span the two forks of the river. The Gazebo across the Street contains a picnic table for your lunch, and a nice view of the river, as the two streams converge on their way to the Forks of the Wabash. Go ahead and cross the street and find the Historical Marker on the Bridge.
The Historical Marker will tell you about the Huntington Ford. You can see the dressed limestone abutments on the riverbank for a previous bridge. The first bridge was built here in 1843. Prior to that, Indians used this spot to ford the River on their way to the Treaty grounds at the Forks of the Wabash. At one time, a dugout canoe, when hailed, carried pedestrians across the river at this Spot. Your question is this: What was the charge to cross?
The cache container is a 35mm film canister.
