Geocache Description:

Caches are not allowed in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, therefore, to honor the tremendous dedication of service the rangers provide to the park, this cache is located in a Gatlinburg city park (Herbert Holt Park) before entering the downtown "tourist mecca", mountain community of Gatlinburg.

GSMNPS Rangers

Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service Rangers
Protecting natural and historic reources
"unimpaired for future generations."

National parks emphasize strict preservation of pristine areas. Park rangers work for the National Park Service (NPS) under the Department of Interior.

The National Park Service ranger is the highly visible employee of the Great Smoky Mountains. He or she is trained in various disciplines that includes highway patrol, search and rescue, fire fighting, and public relations in and out of the park. When employed, they are trained and committed to protecting both the visitor and the resources. Any visitor caught defacing natural or cultural resource is fined for the damage and directed to appear before the US Magistrate. At the same time the park ranger, like any law enforcement officer, lays their life on the line to protect the visitor from any calamity that might befall them while vacationing in the Great Smokies.

A present day responsibilty of the GSMNPS Rangers is in its fight to control the spread of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, a tiny insect that was first found in the GSMNP in May 2002. The HWA feeds on the sap of hemlock needles, without needles the trees starve to death, usually within 3 to 5 years of the initial attack. The Great Smokey Mountains National Park is home to 5000 acres of hemlock-dominated forest, with 500 acres in old-growth forest.

**Much of the previous information was provided by Roy Glenn Cardwell, presently Mayor of Pittman Center, who grew up in Greenbrier and served as a Smoky Mountain Park Service Ranger for 34 years, 20 of which he served as supervisor of the park's Sugarlands Visitor Center.**

Herbert Holt Park is a subtle quiet park, hidden away from the bustling city of Gatlinburg. To reach the park, turn RIGHT just before traffic light #1 and before Cooters, coming from Pigeon Forge. Bear right and when you cross over a one-lane bridge, you will see a sign that says HERBERT HOLT PARK. You will find a kids-designated (12 and under free) trout fishing stream, picnic tables, benches and charcoal BBQ grills along the stream, a playground with swings and a jungle-gym type structure, covered pavilion with a bunch of picnic tables (pavilion fee and reservation required), a walking trail and a building with public restrooms.

A camoflauge vitamin bottle is your quest. This cache contains logbook only and is only large enough for very small trade items. Insure to bring along a pen to sign the log.

Due to tree cover, accurate cooridinates may be difficult to obtain. A “spoiler” hint is provided if you so choose to use.

Have fun and enjoy the park!
