The Wilts and Berks Canal opened in 1810 and ran for 52 miles from
the Kennet and Avon Canal at Melksham, to the River Thames at
Abingdon. Unfortunately an Aquaduct further up the route (near
Stanley, Chippenham) collapsed in 1901 and ended the canal's use.
Restoration has started in an attempt to restore the canal, a
massive task. This location has a series of locks which are
currently being restored, more details are available at this
web site.
