Pewsham Locks (Wiltshire) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Wombles: Have now checked and unfortunately can confirm that this cache has been muggled; all that was left was the logbook. It's had a good life so archiving to make space for other people to place new caches.

Geocache Description:

This cache is close to the hard-surfaced National cycle path at Pewsham, Chippenham. This is a hard surface which is wheelchair friendly although the cache is around a mile from the road. Dogs and children also permitted (care required near the old locks). The walk to this cache goes through some lovely countryside.

The Wilts and Berks Canal opened in 1810 and ran for 52 miles from the Kennet and Avon Canal at Melksham, to the River Thames at Abingdon. Unfortunately an Aquaduct further up the route (near Stanley, Chippenham) collapsed in 1901 and ended the canal's use.

Restoration has started in an attempt to restore the canal, a massive task. This location has a series of locks which are currently being restored, more details are available at this web site.

The suggested parking for this cache is at N51°26.602', W02°06.249' (on the grass verge). An Ordnance Survey map for this location is available at this web site.

The cache is hidden in a camo bag near the path.
