Geocache Description:

This cache was placed on May 10, 2004. It is located along Madison county's newest bike trail (as of above date), the Quercus Grove Trail. I have included a logbook and a Where's George $1 bill folded into the shape of a t-shirt. This cache is named for the Old Carpenter crossroad nearby.

The bike trail begins near the intersection of 143 and 157, just east of downtown Edwardsville. It is paved and continues for about 2.5 miles to Hazel Rd., Northeast of town. This trail is supposed to eventually extend to Staunton. With the construction of the Sangamon Valley Bike Trail between Virden and Athens, I wouldn't be surprised if this will one day be part of a trail system that connects the trails in the Madison County area to Springfield, IL.

Update 11/3/04
Madison County Transit has now extended this trail further northeast to Jerusalem Rd. This extension roughly doubles the length of the trail. The new section has a chet surface. MCT also announced that it received a $400,000 grant from the state. Part of that money will go towards extending the trail to Hamel. See www.mcttrails.org for more info.

Update 1/12/08
Madison County Transit has now extended this trail all the way to Hamel. There is an on-road connector once you reach Jerusalem Rd., then the trail follows 143 north to Hamel. See www.mcttrails.org for more info.
