Geocache Description:

As in Sierra's? This cache is located at 9,750 feet, and offers a nice introduction to these high mountains. After finding the cache, take the time to explore nearby Horseshoe Meadows. It's a great place for picnicking, camping, horseback riding (some of the campsites have corrals), and excellent hiking trails.

The road to the meadows is usually closed in the winter (around November through May) due to snow, so this cache may not be accessable at all times. In winter, and early spring, recommend calling ahead to the Whitney Visitor Center at 760-876-6222 to speak with the visitor center rep on road conditions/closures.

Directions: From Highway 395 at Lone Pine, head west on either Whitney Portal Road, or Lubken Canyon Road to access Horseshoe Meadows Road. Follow Horseshoe Meadows Road up the mountain for approximately 12 miles until reaching the pass at 9,600 feet. There are seven switchback's to the pass. However the road is two lanes, well paved, and is passable for most vehicles.

Park at coordinates 36-28.010N, 118-07.933W. Proceed on foot up the nearby hill for approximately 500 feet to the cache coordinates (36-27.925N, 118-07.914W). Take your time climbing the hill. Although it's not steep, or far to the cache, you'll be puffing due to the high altitude. Also, for safety sake, stay on the northern side of the hill. Don't be poking around looking for the cache on the steep southern side, as the cache is not hidden there.

The cache is hidden near the top of a pile of rocks, at the summit of the hill. Original contents of the cache were: Log book, laser pointer, AM/FM mini radio, mini LED keychain torch light (very bright), toy balls, and an "air puff" toy car.

If you have time after exploring the meadows, follow Horseshoe Meadows Road back down until it ends at Whitney Portal Road. Follow Whitney Portal Road up to see what the tallest mountain in the contiguous U.S. (Mt Whitney, 14,491 ft) has to offer. There's also quite a few more caches in the vicinity to go after.
