Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden in Mill Dam Park in Freeville, NY. A short but interesting hike will bring you to it. The area can be muddy in spring, and is buggy in summer. Some areas of the island have many unpleasant prickly briar bushes, but you can reach the cache without struggling through these.

The cache is in a medium sized plastic food container. It started out filled with assorted miniature birds, nests, eggs, clay pots, polished rocks, etc. The area is a popular site for nesting geese in the summer. They will let you know if you get near a nest.

Mill Dam Park is located on Fall Creek at the site of an old water powered gristmill. The mill was built in 1833 and remained in operation until about 1930. Freeville was a busy railroad hub during that era; grains were carried to the mill and products back out to market by rail. At its peak, pancake flour from the mill was sold throughout the country. In the years after WW I, competition from large mills in the West led to the slow decline and eventual failure of the mill. It fell into disrepair, and was demolished in 1941 when the Village of Freeville acquired the property as the site for Mill Dam Park. The base of the old slash board dam remains today, as do remnants of the sluice and millrace.
