Day 7 of the West Highland Way takes us from Kingshouse to Kinlochleven and the footpath stays with Caulfield's Military Road as it climbs between Stob Mhic Mhartuin and Beinn Beag.
The order to build the road was issued in Stirling Castle on 20th July 1748. In Caulfields report of 1750 he states that the work was done by a detachment of:three Captains, Seven Subalterns, ten Serjts, ten Corplls, three drums and 293 men.
Today, all you have to do is walk up. You should reach the cache in 45mins from the car park below (Allow an hour if you take three drums with you!)
You should walk up to the cairn at N56 40.568 W4 54.870, then leave the main way and follow a path up to the cache and away from the traffic. This is the only boggy part of this quest.
Enjoy breathtaking views.
