Emerson Falls Hydro consist of an 18-inch dam and an intake canal built more than one hundred years ago. Constructed in 1894, it had been designed to channel water into a vast system of aquaducts, cisterns, cement tanks and ponds, where it provided fresh-flowing water for rearing thousands of fingerling trout annually at the federally operated hatchery. The hatchery was taken over by the State of Vermont in the 1930s and ran successfully until the early 1950s when a steady decline in water quality brought on by the growth in population along the river in North Danville led to an eventual demise in the viability of the hatchery. The cache is located near the old fresh water holding tank that fed the hatchery tanks and ponds. Don't forget to check out the trash rake up along the falls.
