On The Pole for The Georgia 400! Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

KBI: I visited the cache site today, and ... wow. That dadgum tree grows FAST!! (Fast is good in NASCAR, right?)

There are many issues here, and as a result I have decided to permanently retire this cache:

(1) The tree has grabbed the container and will not let go. That’s right: somehow the little plastic container ended up in a hole at the top of the large chest-high horizontal branch to which it was leashed, and the tree has grown around and over it. I tried to chisel away enough wood to pull it out, but it quickly became obvious that to do so would require causing more damage to the tree than I was willing to inflict (and probably with a chainsaw, which most likely wouldn’t go over very well in this quiet little neighborhood park.) If the tree wants my cache container that bad, it can keep it.

(2) The adjacent field has been fenced off from all sides, apparently to allow the grass to recover from the heavy trampling of park visitors. I had to clamber around the end of one of the fences – in violation of a posted sign – just to get to the cache site. No indication when the field will be publicly accessible again.

(3) The cache is quite a ways from my house, and frankly the convenience-to-fun factor has dropped to the point that it’s not worth maintaining any more.

(4) The cache has been active for over two years. I have several ideas for new caches that I want to hide, and I want to keep my active cache total down to a manageable and maintainable level This one has had a good run.

(5) I’m a HUGE Jeff Gordon fan, and I believe this is the year he is finally going to score his fifth Cup championship, which would invalidate the next-to-last question. Well okay, not really ‘invalidate’ it, but I would have to re-word the question, and ... well, maybe not even that, but it seems like a nice way to commemorate the Drive for Five ... when it happens ... IF it happens ... okay, that’s not a reason for archiving the cache at all, it’s just that Gordon is dominating the points race right now, and I wanted to rub it in for all the anti-24 folks out there ... [:D]

Now that the cache is archived I have modified the description to include the answers to the quiz questions for anyone who might be interested. The answers are in bold -- and by the way, that last number should be zero, NOT "43." It won't let me edit the text now that I've pushed the big red ARCHIVE button. Oh well ...

If anyone out there can figure out how to convince that tree to release its grip, let me know ... and if you somehow manage to do so, and if you haven’t logged the cache yet: help yourself to a smiley! [:D]

Geocache Description:

This is N.A.S.C.A.R.:

The North Atlanta Sports Cache Attracting Rednecks - I mean, uh, Racefans!

(The cache is NOT at the coordinates posted above. Those numbers are just “field fillers.”)

“The green flag waves! The pace car dives onto Pit Road! Tighten them belts one more time boys, it’s time to go RACIN’! BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY!”

If you live or work around here, you’re familiar with the twice-daily local feature race known as the Georgia 400. You can frequently race four-wide here like they do at Talladega, but, like Martinsville, you’ll be hard on the brakes every ten seconds or so. Cautions are frequent – pay attention to your spotter in the helicopter!

The cache is located near the Start/Finish line.

To qualify for TODAY’S race you’ll have to demonstrate your broad and impressive knowledge of NASCAR’s premier racing series (or maybe do a little “Googling”).

The coordinates are:

N QU AL.IFY
W SP OT.TER

Here’s your quiz!

(Q) What number did Dale Earnhardt make famous? 3

(U) How many Cup Championships did Darrell Waltrip win? 3

(A) How many “turns” are there at Darlington? 4

(L) Take the number of Jeff Gordon’s Cup wins in 1998, and subtract the answer for question (A). 9 (13 minus 4)

(I) How many crewmembers are normally allowed “over the wall” during a pit stop? 7

(F) How many bonus points does a driver get for leading a lap? 5

(Y) You won seven Cup season championships during the 80’s and 90’s. How many letters in your last name? (Spell carefully.) 9 (Earnhardt)

(S) What number has Dale Earnhardt Jr made famous? 8

(P) What is your starting position if you’re directly behind the outside pole sitter? 4 (pole sitter and second place (outside pole) qualifier make up the front row; third and fourth starters comprise the second row)

(O) How many weekends a year do the Cup cars race clockwise? 2 (There are currently two road course races on the schedule, which traditionally run clockwise.)

(T) In how many Cup races did Richard Petty and Jeff Gordon compete against each other? 1 (the final race of the 1992 season -- in Atlanta!)

(T) How many times did Dale Earnhardt win the Daytona 500? 1 (in 1998)

(E) Your fourth Cup championship moved you up to third place on the all-time list for number of championships (if not race wins). How many letters in your last name? 6 (Gordon)

(R) Take the number that Richard Petty made famous, and subtract the number of cars in a full Cup starting grid. 43 (Car number 43, minus 43 cars)

Now that you’ve got your chassis setup dialed in, ladies and gentlemen: START YOUR ENGINES! Slide into the draft, use the Chrome Horn if you have to, and get out there and get some track position!

I'll be happy to verify your coords via email, if you like, before you hunt for the cache.

Congratulations to KVOM for taking the checkered flag! (Hey, don't forget to thank your sponsors!) He collected the First Finder prizes: A cool FTF award, and a gift certificate good for one free t-shirt from a certain well-known North Georgia racing landmark and dining establishment. Let us know which shirt you pick!
