Geocache Description:

Preamble

I had been wanting to set up a logic problem cache for quite a while. So, in late April, while spending a weekend at our cottage, I studied some old Logic Problems magazines that had been lying dormant for many years. (My daughter and I used to have timed contests in solving these headache makers. She usually won.) Arriving home in Ottawa after the weekend, I was startled to see that julesd had posted his excellent 'It's All Logical' cache. So, he beat me to it.

Anyway, here's a somewhat different puzzle that I created. It's pretty easy, so you won't need many aspirins. I hope you enjoy it. It is in the greater Ottawa area; unfortunately, I wasn't able to hide the cache near a raccoon nest.

The Puzzle

There are 16 playing cards from a regular deck placed face down on a table as shown in the setup below.

You need to determine the face value of each of the cards in the positions A, B, C, ... P. The values of the 16 cards may be 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, or *. The * represents the Joker's value which is wild and may have any value and any suit. The Ace has a value of 1.

  1. The same face value does not appear more than once in any column or in any row.
  2. No card is next to another of the same colour, either horizontally or vertically. Diamonds and Hearts are red and Spades and Clubs are black.
  3. All four suits are represented in each row, and in each column.
  4. There are four cards with a face value of 5.
  5. There are two cards with a face value of 2; one of them is in the same column as the Joker
  6. There are two cards with a face value of 6 and they are of opposite colour.
  7. There are two cards with a face value of 7 and they are of opposite colour.
  8. A card with the face value of 8 is immediately to the left of a card with face value of 5 and is immediately below a card with face value of 6.
  9. A 5 is in the bottom row, has a 3 to its left and a Spade to its right.
  10. The 3 in the bottom row is immediately below a Diamond which has a 5 to its left.
  11. An Ace, which is not a Heart, is in the second row, has a Joker to its right, and is below a 4 of Clubs.
  12. The Diamond in the third row has a Spade to its left.

The Cache

The posted coordinates are there just to confuse you!

The location of the first waypoint is at North LB JP.IDN West KB AF.CHM . At this waypoint you will find a tag with the partial values for the north and west minutes of the next waypoint. To get the total coordinate values, add 22.413 minutes to the north partial value and 40.272 minutes to the west partial value. (The degree portions of the next waypoint are the same as those determined in the puzzle, 22 & 40.) Go to that location. If you find a tag, continue on to the coordinates given on the tag; if you find the well-camouflaged cache, congratulate yourself.

You may encounter a camp-ground on the way, but there is no charge. The custodian is usually absent.

PLEASE do not include spoilers in your logs. Logs with spoilers will be deleted immediately. If you believe there are any problems with the cache setup, please advise me privately by e-mail so that I may fix them if necessary.
