Founder John Poole planted the original vineyards between 1969 and 1974.
These were among the first new winegrape plantings in 50 years in Southern
California, the birthplace of California wine!
Now John’s son, Peter Poole, directs Mount Palomar as the region’s first
winery under second generation leadership. His innovations are based upon more
than 20 years experience in the Temecula wine region. During that time, Mount
Palomar has been the leader in experimentation and introduction of new grape
varieties. Success has been attained with the classic California grape
varieties, while more recent plantings have focused upon carefully selected
grape varieties from Italy and Southern France, which the winery has shown are
especially well-suited to Temecula’s Mediterranean climate.
Winemaker, Etienne Cowper, is an experienced craftsman with an advanced
degree in enology. He combines his sense of artistry with the most current,
advanced winemaking methods to create wines of character and unusual
smoothness and palatability.
Mount Palomar produces about 14,000 cases of wine annually from 50 acres of
estate vineyard and selected grape purchases. The winery property is
attractively landscaped with vineyards, olive trees, and scenic picnic areas.
Visitors may taste and purchase wines and related merchandise in our Guest
Center, and enjoy a variety of foods from the Mediterranean Deli. Mount
Palomar also hosts several unique wine events each year.
