The Lower Wolf Trail System is located just north of Newport, Washington. It offers terrific views of the Pend Oreille River.
The search for this cache begins at the Lower Wolf Trail Head. This trail system is located on the north edge of Newport. To access the trail head, turn north onto Warren Avenue as it intersects Highway 20. The US Forest Service compound is located just across the highway from the turn. Warren Avenue is a paved street until it turns to gravel. At this point it is called the Ashenfleter Bay Road. A sign indicates that this road is a dead end, however, continue on the Ashenfelter Bay Road until you reach the Wolf Trail parking area on the left. These trails are a bit more narrow than their cousins on the upper trail system. Two trails head out of the trail head. As you are looking at the trail head information sign, take the trail to your right. Follow this trail to the Trail 304/305 junction. Take trail 304 at this point. The trail winds through thickly forested land that is rich with a mixture of conifer and wildflowers. While you are walking, enjoy the views of Ashenfelter Bay and the Pend Oreille River. Cedar benches are strategically located along the way. Proceed to the “Viewpoint." From here look through the trees to enjoy the best view in the area. The cache is located in an ammo container.
